The Hotel
We will be staying at Agroturismo Il Portone, a hotel created by husband and wife Giancarlo DiBiase and Donatella D’Angelo. They have created something on their land that is both wonderfully simple and very profound. Donatella’s family has worked the land for generations. Even after they had left the land for a time during and after WWII to escape the horrors of war, they came back to the place they were from to continue a traditional life based on the important tenants of growing and producing quality food and maintaining strong and special bonds within their family and community. The development of the Agriturismo Il Portone came from the desire to be able to share this way of life with visitors. They are now able to offer an expression of their family’s love for the land and the region and what it offers.
The Hotel is built from ruined stone agricultural buildings on the end of the family farm. Left intact, and still being used today, is the beautiful stone bread oven that was used for generations to make bread for families in the village. The bread we will eat is the made with the same grains (now grown by the D’Angelo family), and baked the same way it has been done for generations. We really get to break bread with those who came before us. You can feel that in the food.
The rooms are brand new with modern comfortable furniture and modern amenities in the bathrooms. The hotel was built by local stonemasons, and captures the perfect balance between ancient and modern, providing the the rustic luxury we are able to enjoy for our week.
